Energy storage installations will play a strategic role in stabilizing and providing flexibility to the energy system, the expert is confident.
In the foreseeable future, energy storage systems (ESS) will play a strategic role in stabilizing and ensuring the flexibility of the United Energy System of Ukraine. Therefore, it is important today to give all stakeholders an understanding that it is both possible and necessary to work in this market, believes Yuriy Podolyak, head of IKNET, a company specializing in managing investment projects in the energy sector. He shared this in an interview with the Energy Club media department.
The expert emphasized that the UZE market in Ukraine is already operating, and there are already implemented pilot projects that confirm its effectiveness. Therefore, it can be developed, and moreover, in several directions at once. What’s more – in all these directions, it is already bringing real benefits.
"We aim to convey a clear signal to industrial consumers and authorities: the WEC market has a practical foundation, it works, and is ready to support the energy stability of both individual enterprises and the country as a whole. In return, it requires competent regulation, investments, and scaling," Podolyak stated.
According to him, it can be confidently stated that we have now reached the stage of mass implementation of such systems in various segments of this market.
“UZE technologies are already well-developed and widely used around the world, particularly in Europe. The legislative framework in Ukraine was developed during 2023-2025, providing the opportunity to implement such projects – both in the consumption and renewable energy (RES) sectors, as well as individual facilities. The significant difference in cost between cheap and expensive electricity, along with the possibility of saving money or even earning through UZE, has created an economic incentive. So currently, the only remaining barrier is the understanding that one can and should work in this market,” emphasized the head of IKNET.
He added that in order to attract capital and further develop this sector, it is necessary to carry out information campaigns so that potential participants in this market believe in it.
"Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) are already becoming a standard element of the United Energy System. Dozens of projects are already connecting to the TSO or DSO networks – and this is just the beginning! I am confident that in the future they will play a strategic role in stabilizing and ensuring the flexibility of the UES as a whole," stated Yuriy Podolyak.
